Appalachian State University Honors and Engagement Community

Boone, North Carolina

SKA collaborated with Perkins + Will on the design of the ASU Honors and Engagement Community (formerly Living Learning Center). SKA provided design services for plumbing, electrical, mechanical and fire protection systems. The project was comprised of three phases, including the renovation of Cone Residence Hall, a new ten-story residence tower (Summit Hall), Plemmons Student Union Center addition, as well as a new classroom building (Appalachian Hall). Spaces surround a central, outdoor courtyard and include eight “smart” classrooms, a library and offices for the Honors College, which are housed in the three-story connecting Appalachian Hall. Included in the scope was an extensive fire protection system, which involved an underground water distribution system, sprinkler system, standpipe system, and fire pump for all new construction. SKA also provided design for a solar water heating system utilizing flat plate solar collectors on the ten-story structure, Summit Hall, which provided hot water for the dormitory. Cone Residence is LEED Gold certified. Both Summit Hall and Appalachian Hall are under certification review for LEED Silver. Plemmons Student Union is under certification review for LEED Gold. SKA also provided MEP/FP and structural engineering services for the design of a Regional Utility Building that serves as the utility hub for this eastern portion of campus. The RUB was constructed into the side of steep terrain, requiring very large retaining walls in addition to the strict equipment requirements associated with this type of facility.
