East Carolina University Minges Coliseum

SKA provided structural engineering and special inspection services for this addition to the existing ECU basketball coliseum to provide a new main entrance and lobby, two new practice gymnasiums, and team spaces for both the men’s and women’s basketball program. The building addition was steel framed and supported on pile foundations. Unique structural features included difficult pile cap and grade beam configurations to work column foundations into tight spaces against the existing building while avoiding existing underground utilities. The new gymnasiums have very tall walls so that the roof would match that of the adjacent coliseum. These tall walls required extensive vertical framing elements and lateral bracing systems. The roof framing over the gymnasiums include arched top chord pre-engineered trusses.
