Ed Thomas Water Treatment Plant

Burlington, North Carolina

The City of Burlington selected SKA for a failure investigation due to cracking in the brick masonry. The plant was constructed in two phases in 1948 and 1956; it has a structure of cast-in-place concrete, steel framing, and load bearing masonry. Steel framing elements embedded in the load bearing masonry walls showed signs of significant corrosion. SKA performed a series of condition assessments of the building envelope and related wall and roof structures for the purpose of developing preliminary repair drawings and cost estimates. SKA reviewed the conditions by visual examination and tested the steel framing, brick masonry, cast-in-place concrete, windows and roofing.
