Granville Towers / University Square Facade Repairs

Chapel Hill, NC

Close

Before purchase by UNC in 2009, SKA performed a condition assessment and investigation to address observed distress within the masonry facade at all three residence halls of Granville Towers and the two office buildings comprising University Square. The investigation of the distressed locations resulted in the design and repair of the masonry facade, which included the replacement of over 3,000 lineal feet of corroded steel shelf angles, and the installation of new thru-wall flashing, new expansion relief joints, and over 12,000 additional retrofit masonry anchors for securement of the brick masonry facade. The repairs on each building were coordinated during a four month period around the students’ schedules and residents’ use of the towers, with stringent access, noise and dust controls in place.
