Koontz Intermediate School / Eblen Intermediate School

In 2012, SKA collaborated with Architectural Design Studio, PA, on the design for the new Eblen & Koontz Intermediate Schools in Asheville, North Carolina. The $30.2 million project consisted of two identical two-story schools designed to create healthy environments that will inspire student creativity and enhance teacher and staff performance. The primary structural systems consisted of exposed polished concrete floor slab on structural steel composite floor structure and reinforced load bearing concrete masonry walls on shallow foundations. Two of the many eco-friendly design features include roof solar thermal panels and daylight monitors in each classroom to utilize natural light. The school’s energy efficient and sustainability design requires 30 percent less energy than typical schools and received LEED Silver Certification.
