Wake Forest Baptist Medical Cancer Center Deck and Pedestrian Bridge

Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Close

Working with HKS architects, SKA served as structural engineer for the six-story vertical expansion of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s Cancer Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina – the largest dedicated cancer hospital in the state. The new facilities total more than 530,000 square feet and met the client’s goal of bringing both inpatient and outpatients services into a single location, enhancing the patient experience. Design strategies included ensuring all rooms remain private, accommodate families, and have abundant natural light to create a healing environment reflective of the medical center’s holistic care approach to medical treatment. The four-story atrium has a prominent water feature at the entrance, regional artwork, soothing music, and bountiful daylight. A courtyard is strategically featured on the upper floors to provide families with an environment to reflect, communicate, and socialize. Part of the scope included a pedestrian bridge at the fourth floor, as well as the reduction of the penthouse. The addition opened in late 2013.
